David Tennant's Tenth Doctor was a huge hit for the show. Popular with both critics and audiences alike, the successful reboot of the show was catapulted into pure perfection with Ten's incredible character and amazing hair. When Tennant announced he was leaving the show in 2008, the fans were distraught, and the BBC were genuinely concerned for the show's longevity.

Irrelevant of who would be cast as the Eleventh Doctor, the BBC knew that person wouldn't be David Tennant. Part of them predicted Series 5 onwards would be a total failure, and the show almost met its demise when Ten regenerated.

Of course, Matt Smith took on the role and made Who even bigger than it was. Good thing the BBC took that supposed risk, as we wouldn't have Who today.
