8 Ups & 1 Down For Star Trek: Lower Decks 5.8: Upper Decks
7. UP — Cauterise A Cursing Caitian
This is an UP with the odd caveat. Cav-e-cat? "Chief Medical Officer's f**king log" is undoubtedly one of the funniest lines of Upper Decks, astutely playing on the random mundanity of the exercise, like Captain Kirk narrating half an episode in real time. The quotidian of the log is the running gag, here, and it works. Naturally, "constructive criticism" just makes Grumpy Cat grumpier, too.
Though exceedingly hilarious, the voice-acting on point, it is also, like the pain, a little excessive at times. Let's not be prudish either. We can certainly take a joke — the more risqué the risk definitely pays off, here. However, anyone with so much as a moderately sensitive ear (or sensibility) might need to turn the sound on low or run the risk of being overwhelmed by all that caterwauling. Good joke. Maybe take it down a few decibels?
The interaction between Nurse Westlake and Doctor T'Ana remains one of the highlights of the episode. His sassy comebacks are perhaps as queerly coded as the line that starts the whole S&M (Scratching posts & Miaowing, of course!) sequence.
