No other new Doctor Who story has quite managed to capture the extent of the Cybermans aim - to convert anything and everything into one of their own. Here they even converted their own creator against his will. This was a proper origin story which, whilst not disregarding what had come before, still managed to create something altogether new and brilliant. They were properly scary here. Teased throughout the first part, their full unveiling towards the end was a triumph. As was their grasp on London as they marched through the darkened streets and took control of the general populous. But what made the Cybermen scary here was their complete lack of emotion and their stoic determination. Recognising what an asset their creator John Lumic was, the Cybermen went against his wishes and converted him into the leader, achieving their ultimate and only purpose - to convert. Of course Rise Of The Cybermen and The Age Of Steel were nowhere near as brilliant as their 1966 introduction, but it is a worthy followup. More stories like this - showing the full extent of their evil - need to be created. Stories in which the Cybermen are the primary focus. What did you think of our ranking?
