Ah, The Ice King. The most commonly seen villain in Adventure Time and a permanent thorn in the side of Finn and Jake.

While he undoubtedly has problems - the biggest one being his constant attempts at kidnapping princesses in the hope of one falling in love with him, in a lot of way he's misunderstood. By Princess Bubblegum's own admission he isn't a serious threat, merely a bit of a nuisance. He is lonely and wants to be friends with Finn and Jake. He has gone as far as disguising himself as a horse to spy on them in an attempt to learn how to be happy, and got super-meta by writing his own Finn and Jake fanfic with the gender swapped characters Fiona and Cake. In the episode Mortal Coil he even helped our heroes save the day.

Furthermore, in the episode Simon and Marcy, Marceline tells Finn and Jake the Ice King's backstory and how he was once a kindly scientist named Simon. He adopted his now famous crown and although it drove him mad, he did it to protect the young vampire.
