Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. - 10 Things You May Have Missed In The Series Finale

This was alluded to a little earlier, but there's no happy ending for "Philinda" in the final episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. There are certainly hints they could cross paths again, but they're not exactly happily married and living out their happy ending the same way FitzSimmons are in the flashforward.

In an interview with TV Insider, executive producer Maurissa Tancharoen was asked if there was ever version of a finale where they did stay together, and she explained that ending season five delivered.

"That was the promise of their relationship right there," she explains. "And so, what has happened since, I think adds to the layers of their already very complex [relationship], and adds to the depth of the love they already have for one another. I do think her being a professor at Coulson Academy is definitely an indication of her feelings about him and the importance of continuing his legacy. Her even saying, you know, to LMD Coulson, 'please come by and share some of your stories.'"

That's certainly an interesting take, though it's hard not to wonder whether there was a reason why their story was left open-ended...and whether Marvel Studios could have future plans for Coulson.
