Altered Carbon Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs

5. The Gritty, Mature Tone

Altered Carbon Joel Kinnaman

It wouldn't have surprised anyone if, in order to achieve its gorgeous visual style, Altered Carbon's more mature content had to be toned down, but this being Netflix rather than a conventional TV network, that thankfully wasn't the case at all.

This show is not for kids, let's just say that. It is jam-packed not just with brutal violence and blood-letting, but plentiful graphic nudity - of both the male and female kind, which is refreshing - to the point that it's almost comical.

Seriously, if you thought Game of Thrones was gratuitous in the sex department, it's got nothing on Altered Carbon. You can argue it makes the show feel "trashy", but considering the inherent sleaze of the world created here, it doesn't harm the series' integrity at all.

Sure, you might not want to watch it with your parents, but for those craving a sci-fi show that's both big-budget and lets it all hang out - literally - this is a major breath of fresh air.
