American Horror Story: 10 Worst Characters
5. Jack Samuels
A gay Nazi police officer. It seems like Ryan Murphy just picked out three random American Horror Story character descriptors when coming up with Jack Samuels, but the results were less than stellar.
Evan Peter’s Kai and Sarah Paulson’s Ally took the lion’s share of the spotlight in Cult, making it difficult for anyone else to shine. However, Adina Porter, Billie Lourde and Alison Pill all fared better than Colton Haynes did with Jack Samuels. He just seems to be there purely for plot, with a detective needed to keep things ticking along before Kai’s rise accelerates the narrative.
He just doesn’t do anything. His denial of his sexuality isn’t new ground for the show, neither is Nazism within those in power. His Nazi memorabilia seems to be just for shock value too. You could give the show the benefit of the doubt; he’s the symbol for the increase in the radicalised alt-right, his inability to cope with homosexuality a symptom his toxic masculinity and his sex with Kai and relationship with Harrison a sign of hypocrisy hand in hand with those ideals. But when it comes to Samuels, that benefit is something the show scarcely deserves.
