Arrowverse: Every Pilot Ranked From Worst To Best
1. Supergirl
Supergirl's pilot episode had two added advantages in the fact that it was filmed for a bigger network (CBS) and that its titular character was directly related to one of DC's two most popular superheroes (Superman).
Those two advantages ended up paying off a great deal, because the show made a debut so triumphant, so larger-than-life and so inspiring that it felt often felt like we were watching one of the classic Superman films unfold before our eyes.
Focusing on Kara Zor-El's attempts to follow in her cousin's footsteps and embrace her Kryptonian legacy, the pilot told the story of how one woman quickly put it all on the line to become the hero that National City (and, by extension, the world) desperately craved. And it managed to do so without falling under the shadow of Superman or the issues surrounding his lack of appearances - as the network clearly wasn't allowed to use him.
With an exceptional leading performance from Melissa Benoist, an incredibly strong supporting cast - not-to-mention an exhilarating turn from the incomparable Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant - plus a heavy focus on family.
Supergirl's uplifting pilot made wise use of its limited time to tell the story it set out to and in the process, managed to make a 40-minute TV episode feel like a full-length movie.
