Although the first two seasons slowly trickled down little hints about what was really going on in this show, the show runners upped the pace in the third. One of the reasons for this is because of the introduction of Rod Reiss, one of the few remaining descendants of King Karl Fritz and Historia's estranged father.

Reiss had been hiding in the background for years, keeping control of the Founding Titan until Grisha Yeager killed his family and took it from the Reiss bloodline. After capturing Historia and explaining that she was his illegitimate daughter, Reiss hoped that she would turn into a titan, eat Eren and bring the Founding Titan back to the family.

However, she refused to do this, meaning that his plan to regain the Founding Titan had failed. Instead, Reiss took the titan serum himself and turned himself into the most grotesque looking titan the show has ever shown. Despite attacking the Orvud District, Eren managed to help blow him up using explosives. However, Historia was the one to land the final, killer blow against her father.
