Avatar The Last Airbender: Every Main Character Ranked Worst To Best
3. Uncle Iroh
Much like Toph, Uncle Iroh is a fan-favourite character who tops many best wise mentor lists. The cliché of the older mentor to the young protagonists has been done to death, but Iroh perfects the mould and adds a lot more to it.
Firstly his initial character is somewhat difficult to process. As you enter the show, you assume the narrative will take a binary approach with the Fire Nation being evil and everyone else playing victim to them. However, while there is truth to this, it doesn't paint the whole picture. Despite being part of a dangerous empire, Iroh is shown to be caring, merciful and inherently good.
As he and Zuko's story develops, you learn more about the circumstances that led Iroh to be a Fire Nation general and come to see a lot about how the world of Avatar views evil.
It would be impossible to discuss Iroh without mentioning the beautiful words of wisdom that he provides. His always optimistic but hard-working mantras genuinely deliver on so many profound life lessons that viewers of the show can use in their own life.
One final note comes in the fact that Iroh also acts as one of the funniest parts of the show, and is displayed as an absolute tour de force when it comes to Fire-Bending, thus making him one of the coolest characters as well.
