Avatar The Last Airbender: Every Main Character Ranked Worst To Best
2. Aang
We have seen many shows before that have a "chosen one" character. It is a frequent storytelling trope that instantly makes the protagonist seem essential. Occasionally it works well, but at other times it feels like a cheap effort to lend prestige to the lead. In the case of Avatar, this memorable protagonist is a case of the former.
Aang is a brilliantly written lead, as he is unbelievably complicated, but it is a little tough to discern what his most prominent character traits are. He acts as the goofy kid with uncontrolled powers, but also the gifted prodigy, yet additionally the wise and thoughtful stoic role.
The character has a wonderful balance between all of the elements required to make a compelling protagonist, and that is incredibly in keeping with the show's focus on equilibrium. Aang is the complicated yet loveable figure that a show like this needs to work.
The amount of pressure and responsibility that hangs on this Avatar's shoulders would ordinarily devolve a character into being a stoic and dull personality. Still, the writers never let you forget that Aang is a kid first and foremost. His youth gives an additional conflict as he has to overcome his childish desires to save the world.
