Batwoman Season 1 Review: 4 Ups & 3 Downs From 'Down, Down, Down'

Downs...

3. Dodgy CGI Strikes During Another Huge Moment

Batwoman Episode 2 CGI
The CW

It's wrong to expect movie-worthy CGI from television (unless your Game of Thrones or Stranger Things, of course). The production budget just won't allow for it. So it's probably wrong to pull Batwoman up for the same thing in two out of its three episodes. But this isn't just about the use of dodgy CGI, it's about how its used in scenes that are pivotal to the story as it ends up undercutting the grandeur of the moment.

The build towards Kate donning the iconic Batwoman suit reached its conclusion when she met Tommy Eliot on the roof of his building. However, as we get our first look at her, it's incredibly noticeable that she's standing against a CGI blue night sky.

To make matters worse, an alternate angle of this particular moment (the "that's the point" scene) popped up in one of the show's earlier trailers and, as Batwoman was already standing on the roof (as opposed to the edge of it) there was no need for any CGI. And that made it all the more effective.

If only they had gone with that one instead...
