Batwoman Season 1 Review: 9 Ups & 5 Downs
5. The Supporting Cast
While Batwoman is very much Kate Kane's story - or at the very least, the story of her family - it's like every show in that its success is very much the sum of its parts. Yes, Batwoman is the hero that rises up to stop the brewing new evil, but she can't do it alone, so it's a good thing that she's surrounded by a number of great characters who ultimately help her get there.
The show's supporting cast is unquestionably one of its strongest attributes as they bring out the best in Ruby Rose's Caped Crusader while offering up their own engaging narratives at the same time.
Dougray Scott functions well as the perpetually angry Jacob Kane and Meagan Tandy's portrayal of forbidden love interest Sophie Moore adds layers to Kate's characterisation while her own struggles with her sexuality gifts Batwoman with one of its multiple authentic character journeys. Furthermore, Christina Wolfe's crafty Julia Pennyworth provides so much more than a fun link to Batman's beloved butler as her history with Kate enhances the show midway through.
The real supporting stars, however, are Camrus Johnson and Nicole Kang, as both Luke Fox and Mary Hamilton infuse Batwoman with levity at times when it really needs some while also gifting the season with some of its most emotional moments.
As for the other major player not mentioned here, well, we'll get to her later...
