BoJack Horseman: 10 Greatest Diane Episodes

1. The Dog Days Are Over (S5E2)

For this episode, Diane was weirdly the subject of both the A and B story. Following her trip to Vietnam, and the Girl Croosh article she wrote about why you should go, the story was interspersed with flashbacks to the days leading up to her leaving.

BoJack felt like he needed to escape L.A some years before, after breaking up with Wanda and struggling on the set of Secretariat. Here, Diane felt the exact same urge, only this was fueled by, not just her divorce from Mr. Peanutbutter, but how quickly he had moved on.

The episode started with little to no context surrounding her trip, but the blanks were essentially filled in though these flashbacks. It was ultimately Mr. Peanutbutter putting his hand around Pickles’ waist like he used to do to Diane, and the realization that he never would again that broke her. This was arguably the most vulnerable Diane had been at this point in the series, unable to control the tears she would usually have held back.

She fled to Vietnam with her heart more broken than when she thought it couldn’t break any more, but felt no better. Just as alone, and just as broken. And yet, she survived. This was the takeaway, that through the heartache and the pain, she survived, and could carry on surviving on her own.
