Season 3, Episode 16: 14 January 1972The same is true for voices when boys begin to grow You gotta take a lesson from Mother Nature and if you do you'll knowWhen it's time to change, then its time to change, don't fight the tide, come along for the ride, don't you see? When it's time to change, you've got to rearrange who you are into what you're gonna beSha n-na, n-na na n-na na, sha n-na na na... With lyrics like that, it's no wonder Greg thinks he'll make a million bucks off his sizzling new number. But he can't record it at Dinsdale's recording studio - the best in town, he claims - because Dinsdale wants $150 up-front. Then cold-hearted Dinsdale tells Peter that family groups are the big thing now, so what's a budding superstar to do? He recruits his five siblings, including the one whose voice just started breaking, to perform one of the cheesiest songs ever written as a group. They finally raise the money for the recording session but Peter's voice keeps cracking all the way through. Cut to the kid meeting - minus the obvious candidate for exclusion - to vote on whether to record with Peter or ditch his pubescent ass. The result's a tie when Cindy's indecision sees her voting twice. The kids agree they can't record with Peter's voice all askew, but the whole group thing was his idea to start with. What to do? Nobody can make the final call until some more sage advice from Mom seals the deal. "You know, money and fame are very important things but, well, sometimes there are other things ... like people." Nice save at the end, but the bit about money and fame being important is so hilariously misaligned with every other piece of Brady parental advice ever offered about anything! Just as a guilt-ridden sense of obligation to their brother overrides their lust for fame and money, Peter tells them he doesn't want to ruin their recording and will drop out. Way to guilt them back, Pete! The kids feel really bad now but they're in a quandary. They can't record with Peter's voice changing all the way through... or can they? Superstar-in-the-making Greg locks himself away in his room and re-jigs the lyric to actually fit with Peter's changeable vocal. Why else would anyone in their right mind think a line like "the same is true of voices when boys begin to grow" has any place in a million-selling smash hit?! Everything comes together at the last minute and a classic Brady Kids recording is born.
I'm just a guy who loves words. I discover vast tracts of uncharted enjoyment by chucking words together and coming up with stuff that talks about the things I enjoy and love most. I'm also a massive listaholic, so I'm probably talking about a list, looking at a list or banging away at another What Culture list as you read this. My tone's pretty relaxed and conversational, with a liberal sprinkling of sparkling wit, wilting sarcasm and occasional faux-condescension - with tongue almost always firmly planted in cheek.
