Buffy The Vampire Slayer: 10 Most Hated Episodes

6. Go Fish

While the episode gives us Xander in speedos which was an iconic moment in Buffy history, the rest of the episode isn't very good.

When members of the swim team start being killed off, Buffy takes it upon herself to investigate and she learns that the coach is exposing his team to illegal drugs which eventually turns them into fish monsters. It's a very blunt approach on the issues of doping in sport.

It was a brilliant and clever subject to approach but it just felt weird. Given that it came before the finale, it felt like a weird departure from the Angelus arc. It was sadly a filler episode that didn't quite work and the rubbery Creature of the Black Lagoon-esque monsters don't feel original or particularly scary. Even Xander's potential danger doesn't raise the stakes because we know they won't kill him off so randomly.

If the entire episode wasn't weird enough, it ended with the transformed team being allowed to go and swim free in the sea. Well done, Buffy. Just let the monsters go free, where they could just feast on innocent swimmers. It seemed very irresponsible of a slayer to just let the monsters go. Lucky we never hear from them again, I guess.
