Buffy The Vampire Slayer: 12 Best Cult Heroes

1. Spike

Spike Buffy
WB

Despite the wealth of great supporting characters to chose from, there can really only be one name at number one on this list. Simultaneously Buffy's best big bad and its eventual champion (he is the one to save the day in the finale), Spike is undoubtedly the show's greatest cult hero.

At first one third of the triumvirate of evil vampires wrecking Buffy's life in season two - alongside his love Drusilla and Angel-turned-evil Angelus - Spike later returned in season four (with a guest role in season three) now deprived of his ability to bite people, leading him into an uneasy alliance with the Scoobies.

Over the coming seasons, though, he mellowed and fell in love with his former nemesis Buffy, before gaining a soul (and Buffy's love?) and becoming a hero in his own right. In fact, he was so good he outlived the end of the parent show and migrated over to Angel to be a main character on its fifth season.

Despite not getting his own spin-off, Spike is Buffy's biggest breakout character and, fittingly for a vampire, just kept on refusing to die.
