If a supernaturally-themed TV series doesn't have at least one self-loathing broody creature of the night is it even really a supernatural show? These types of characters may have become rather predictable staples of the genre but that's only because of how well they've been done in the past. And you won't find better examples of that than Buffy The Vampire Slayer's Angel and The Vampire Diaries' Stefan Salvatore.
The two shows entertained different generations during their first respective runs - with the former running from 1997 until 2003 and the latter making its presence felt from 2009 until 2017 - but they've both gone down in history as some of the best examples of vampire television. And the two aforementioned characters are among the reasons why.
The primary love interests of their respective leading ladies, Angel and Stefan are centuries-old vampires who have lived long enough to reflect on some of the awful things they've done in their lifetimes. They hate what they are and ultimately try to be better by loving someone more pure than them, becoming heroes of their shows in the process.
