Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Ranking The Songs In Once More With Feeling
4. Going Through The Motions
The first song of the episode is also its most personal. On a normal patrol, Buffy starts to sing about life and how's she dealing with being back in Sunnydale. The confusion we initially feel about her singing is quickly dismissed when we begin to listen to the song.
Buffy is stuck in a rut and living life day by day without any idea of where it's going. Though the overall message lets us know that Buffy isn't quite the woman she used to be, there is a certain hopefulness in Gellar's delivery which lets us know just how strong a person she is.
The fact that this song takes place right at the start of the episode is nothing short of brilliance, since fans watching it are confused by the occurrence. The song captures the essence of the episode to come, and manages to beautifully verbalise Buffy's confusion and detachment from the world and her friends.
Also, the song must be praised for its humour, which sees Buffy save Prince Charming and sing along with the vampires and demons she inevitably slays mid-song. It's fully deserving of its position high on this list.
