Imagine getting a star like James Brolin, who probably ate a good portion of the budget for a fairly independent show, to play a character that has been built up over four seasons, just for him to turn out to be a very one-dimensional, misrepresentation of everything that the character stood for before being brought into the fray.

The arbitration of fan expectations alone is enough of a sour taste, as when William Winger Sr. - Jeff's estranged father - is finally brought in, he turns out to be a reasonable guy with only a few subtle drawbacks. While the idea on paper sounds like it could work if executed correctly, that's about as far as the concept should have gone. The underwhelming interactions between the two are more boring than breathtaking.

The son that comes packaged with Dick Winger Sr. - Willy Winger Jr. - is an even bigger phallus than his dad. But the most offensive odour that is emitted by this stinker of a character and the emphasis on him, is the fact that James Brolin is trying, but the script is barely allowing him to do anything other than drink whisky in a living room.

So, in essence, he's probably just earned a few million fat ones to pretend he's chilling at home with some cameras and microphones around him. Easily the biggest waste of a guest star in the show.
