3. Jeff Winger
Jeff was the glue that held the group - and by extension, the show - together. His development from a shallow and selfish jerk to a shallow but not so selfish friend was one of the show's biggest selling points. He might have seemed like the typical leading man with a hidden heart of gold at first, but he proved to be so much more than that.
The former lawyer turned college student started as an entirely unlikeable guy. While he was effortlessly cool and suave, he was only concerned about himself. This is what made his development throughout the show so fascinating, as you genuinely saw him become a better person by learning from his mistakes and gaining the ability to let people in.
In addition to this, Joel McHale nailed the comedy aspects of the role, as Jeff's arrogance and ego led to some of the funniest moments in the series, such as his ego overload in "Contemporary Impressionists" and his conspiracy in "Conspiracy Theories and Interior Design".
Winger hit all the notes you'd expect from the lead guy but did enough to make the part nuanced and unique.
