Doctor Who: 10 Fan Ideas The Show Should Totally Adopt

9. The Valeyard Occurs In A Metaphorical Space

There's a bit of a plot-hole between 'The Name of the Doctor' and 'The Time of the Doctor'. I understand that Steven Moffat might not have imagined all along that Matt Smith's Doctor would be the thirteen incarnation... but then why would the Great Intelligence suggest that the Doctor would become the Valeyard one day? The Valeyard was an evil incarnation somewhere between the Twelfth and Thirteenth Doctors; it led many people to believe that Peter Capaldi would in fact be playing the Valeyard. So if Matt Smith is the last Doctor, how can he become the Valeyard one day? Well, what if the Valeyard is more metaphorical than anyone realised? What if the Valeyard comes between the Doctor's penultimate and final incarnation? It's the norm for Time Lords to have thirteen lives, it could have just been supposed that the Doctor wouldn't get another regeneration cycle. It's actually more exciting this way; the Doctor is also getting closer to the day he regenerates into the Valeyard; it will never be rewritten, because it's always going to happen, so long as the Doctor always has more lives.
