Doctor Who: 10 Fan Ideas The Show Should Totally Adopt

8. Each Doctor's Last Moments Shape The Next One

There was a line of dialogue cut from Russell T Davies's era that mentioned why the Doctor was suddenly cockney: he'd been hanging around Rose Tyler too long. It's not a stretch to imagine him worrying about her as he regenerated, and it makes sense, given that Eleven was remembering Amelia Pond before he regenerated with a Scottish twang. Whilst it's slightly more of a stretch to imagine Jenna Coleman's northern accent having an influence on the War Doctor's regeneration into Nine, it's an interesting theory that a Doctor can be shaped by his predecessor. Maybe Eleven was influenced by Ten seeing the Time Lords return before dying alone, and maybe Rose saving Nine in 'The Parting of the Ways', helping him not to commit genocide, is what led Ten down a more romantic route with her. It's true from the producers' perspective that every Doctor must act as a reaction to the last one, whether it's casting a young Peter Davison to replace Tom Baker or shaking things up with Patrick Troughton acting like a clown. Maybe an in-universe nod however could open up huge possibilities in the future; it would certainly place more pressure on regeneration stories if the Doctor thought he was going to end up with a personality he didn't want...
