Doctor Who: 10 Historical Figures We Need On the Show

7. Roald Amundsen

This is definitely one of the more obscure figures on the list, but he's totally worth it. Roald Amundsen was a Norwegian explorer who led an expedition in 1911 to reach the South Pole. Are you all thinking what I'm thinking? Well, if you're thinking that this would be the perfect opportunity to feature the Ice Warriors, then yes. You are. So the TARDIS lands in the middle of a frozen tundra, and the Doctor and company see some evidence of civilization. Weird, Martian-y buildings. The Doctor assumes that they're on Mars, although something doesn't feel right about this to him -- but he doesn't have much time to think about it, because they're captured by Ice Warrors. The Amundsen crew is also being held prisoner by the Ice Warriors, who had planned on establishing a colony on the South Pole. They manage to escape and foil the Ice Warriors plans to set up shop on Earth, so they have no choice but to fly back to Mars. Amundsen and his crew are grateful, and promise not to tell anyone of what they found on the South Pole. Not that anyone would believe them, of course. And that's why Roald Amundsen came back to Norway with very little surveying reports, and only two photographs. Once back to civilization, the Doctor alerts a very early version of UNIT, so that they're prepared for the buildings that are down there.
