Doctor Who: 10 Incredible Early Designs Of Your Favourite Monsters

4. The Abzorbaloff Was Meant To Be As Tall As A Double Decker Bus

AbzorbaloffThe Creature You Know: Maybe it was Peter Kay toeing the line between comedy and a poor attempt at scary or audiences not liking the then new concept of Doctor-lite episodes, but Love And Monsters has gone down in history as one of the worst episodes of Nu-Who. Its primary villain, the Abzorbaloff, took much of the flack; not only was it a silly idea, but it gave the show the ability to make an oral sex joke. The Early Design You Don€™t: The Abzorbaloff came to be in the most peculiar of ways; representative of Who€™s position as children€™s teatime fun (as opposed to the geek magnet it is now), it was the winning entry of Blue Peter€™s €˜Design A Doctor Who Monster€™ competition. Because of this the production team put a lot of effort into accurately recreating William Grantham€™s design, but made one key error; they completely misread the scale. Grantham imagined an absolute behemoth, but what he got was a human sized man in a suit. So the one time Who tries hard to stick close to the original design and it blows it. It's all moot really; even if had been the desired double decker high monster originally proposed, it doubtful the episode could have been saved.
