4. It Inspires Nostalgia

Remember this from 'Castrovalva'? The newly-regenerated Fifth Doctor has a tootle and senses that he should be familiar with it. It doesn't fit very well with his developing personality though- so quickly dumps it in favour of cricket. Take a look at; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YhGAg8RdNHU Wonder if he ever secretly had a go at playing the 'Test Match Special' theme away from the prying ears of Adric, Nyssa & Tegan? We'll never know. But it was a nice homage to Pat Troughton by Peter Davison- and there are several more by subsequent Doctors. Sarah Jane Smith finds it in the secondary console room of the TARDIS in 'The Masque Of Mandragora', while the Sixth Doctor eventually remembers how he cherished it in 'The Two Doctors' when he stumbles across its original owner/player. And its there in the Eleventh Doctor's drawing room aboard his own new improved Type 40 in the interactive game/episode simply titled ' TARDIS'. There'll always be a place for it here even if its not as fashionable in school orchestras any more.
