Doctor Who: 15 Most Disastrous Stories Of All-Time

14. The Lodger & Closing Time

I include these together as they are fundamentally the same. The only difference being, one has Cybermen, the other doesn't. Starting with 'The Lodger', I actually had high hopes for this as I was familiar with the comic strip by Roberts on which the story was based. The flaw with the televised version was that the 'likeable' regular character of Mickey Smith is replaced by James Corden (Yes that is a legit complaint) as it feels like a contrived rehash of the Russell T Davies era format. Also both episodes also share a problem of just feeling in the way of the finale. 'Closing Time' in the arc heavy Series 6 is a serious culprit of this. What is worrying is what nearly happened to 'The Lodger'. For no particular reason, Roberts intended to add an antagonist from the past; Meglos. I can't even think of a way that would make sense never mind be desirable. 'Closing Time', is the sequel that no one asked for and made it a further damaging outing for the Cybermen, where 'love' proves to be lethal to them... again. This was supposed to be the Doctor's big send off before going to his 'death', in reality it is underwhelming. The thing that makes this a disaster is that anyone thought it was a good idea to do it not just once but twice.
