Doctor Who: 5 Traits That Made The Fifth Doctor Awesome

1. He Was Neurotic

Davison 496

The Sixth Doctor famously commented on his previous incarnation that he was starting to get neurotic, and he's probably right. Five sometimes made choices by flipping a coin, and often struggled with indecisiveness. With some of the other Doctors, you'll see them gallivanting across the galaxy looking for trouble. Not here. While Five is always willing to get involved when people need his help, you'll notice that he is often reacting to situations rather than digging for conflict. I find it hilarious that he was the second youngest Doctor, but pretty much consistently acts like an old curmudgeon. I love that even though Hartnell was very much an older man, you can see a childish gleefulness permeate his interpretation of the Doctor. And then there's Davison. It always shocks me when people complain about the Fifth Doctor being bland, because for me there's so much going on just beneath the surface. He's certainly very moody, going from a gentle kitten to literally spitting words out at people. I feel like the character was incredibly temperamental, but at the same time usually pretty good at keeping his emotions in check. In that way, he was incredibly complex, and you could always tell that there was something going on in his head even if he wasn't saying anything about it.
