As always, with a new Doctor onboard the TARDIS came a number of other changes. Rather than its traditional Saturday night broadcast, the show was now broadcast twice a week. The TARDIS had also become somewhat crowded with the introduction of two new companions, and so it was decided that Adric should leave in order to make room. In one of the series' more tragic moments Adric attempted to stop a Cyberman controlled freighter from hitting Earth, but with the Doctor unable to save him, and a cyberman destroying the ships controls, he went down with the freighter when it crashed into prehistoric Earth, and wiped out the Dinosaurs.

To celebrate the shows 20th anniversary, all five Doctors were brought together for an onscreen adventure, albeit in a rather roundabout way. Tom Baker decided not to take part as he considered it to be too soon after his departure, and so unbroadcast footage from the incomplete serial Shada was used, and Richard Hurndall portrayed the first Doctor after William Hartnell's death in 1975. Whilst giving the fifth Doctor the bulk of the action, the previous Doctors were transported to Gallifrey's Death Zone (with the fourth trapped in the time vortex). Reunited with popular companions and enemies, the Doctor's incarnations were forced to play the deadly Game of Rassilon by Gallifreyan President Borusa. Believing he had discovered immortality, Borusa was transformed into a living statue. This lead to the Doctor being elected to take his place, which prompted him to run away from his home planet. Again. "After all, that's how it all started."

Following the advice of previous Doctor Patrick Troughton, Peter Davison felt that three years was enough, and decided to leave the show before being seriously typecast. This lead to Colin Baker taking on the title role, but he would go on to have a rough time at the TARDIS console. Not only was his first complete serial, The Twin Dilemma, later voted the worst Doctor Who story ever, but throughout the mid to late eighties the show began to suffer from several ailments, including budget cuts, and insane costume choices.
