3. It Must Be Distinctive
"Wait a minute!" you're probably thinking. "Didn't you just get done saying that the Doctor's outfit should be relatively normal? Make up your mind, crazy lady!" I stand by my statement that as a time traveler, wearing a comparatively normal ensemble is good for remaining incognito and avoiding changing history through the wrong clothes in the wrong time. However, this is the Doctor--we mustn't forget that he will never be your average time traveler. He is an alien and possesses a different dress style than we regular humans do, so it makes sense that his outfits will seem almost normal, but there will always be that one little detail that reminds us that the Doctor is anything but human. The Fifth Doctor is an excellent example of an outfit sustaining a distinctive characteristic while simultaneously appearing mostly normal. His shirt, sweater, jacket, and trousers didn't garishly attract attention even if the entire outfit was more suited for cricketing than time traveling. The celery, however, added that little bit of alien flair that marks the Doctor as being from another world entirely. If you think about it, pretty much all of the Doctor's outfits have had some sort of distinctive mark to set him apart from everyone else--from Four's scarf to Eleven's bowtie, this has been one of the unchanging constants surrounding the Doctor in all of his incarnations.
