Doctor Who Series 8: 15 Obscure Easter Eggs You Probably Missed

6. The Time Traveller's Wife (Dark Water)

Dark Water opens with Clara stealing all of the TARDIS keys with the intent of destroying them all unless the Doctor helps her save Danny. Most of these keys are hidden in the usual cubbyholes you'd expect (boxes, pockets etc.), but one's inside a copy of Audrey Niffenegger's The Time Traveller's Wife. Who knew the Doctor liked light fiction. It may seem rather basic, but there is more than just a little connection in terms of both Who and the book involving time travel. The finale spent an inordinate amount of time misleading the audience, putting Clara's allegiance and identity into doubt multiple times for no perceived reason other than to keep fans uncertain as to what's really going on. This explicit reference is no doubt meant to play into the mystery of Missy's identity - it appears to be a red herring suggesting she's a love interest of the Doctor (possibly River), backing up something she says in Deep Breath.
