Doctor Who: 10 Best Companion Performances In NuWho
1. Karen Gillan (Amy) - The Girl Who Waited
There are suggestions that Gillan's performances actually got worse towards the end of her time on the show. Those who claim this put it down to her losing interest after being part of the Whoniverse for so long. However, her acting in The Girl Who Waited would contradict this claim.
Here, she's pretty much playing two seperate roles. Admittedly she's the same character, but she has to play both the younger version of Amy - the companion that the viewers are used to - and the older version, who is vastly different.
Rather than play Amy's love of adventure, Gillan has to delve into the bitterness of Amy's older self, feeling abandoned and alone for decades. She has to play stubborn, angry and braced against the subtle harshness of the world she's trapped in, all while keeping the underlying sense that this is still the Amy that the viewers know and love.
She gets some great scenes. The look on Amy's face when she's talking about how much she loves Rory is absolutely fantastic. But Gillan also plays the heroic sacrifice of old Amy - something that's quite hard to pull off - with confidence and humility, making for another great moment for the character.
