Doctor Who - 10 Best Moments Of The Third Doctor
6. A Match Met With The Master

The Doctor needed a villain that would truly match his debonaire style and fancy dress. In the episode The Terror of the Autons, the sinister face of the Master was revealed to British audiences for the first time. Designed to be The Doctor's menacing counterpart, The Master delighted in partnering with the Autons and steadily convincing the residents of Earth to destroy themselves. Roger Delgado, the first incarnation of the Master, arrived on screen dressed in a mandarin style suit of black and a goatee that practically screamed his evil intent. He quickly employed those around him to do his bidding. This included using the innocent and easily manipulated Jo Grant to try and blow up the Doctor. Despite the fact that the Master blatantly tried to kill both the Doctor and those he's swore to protect, the Doctor obviously enjoyed the challenge of an intelligent rival Time Lord in his own backyard.
Like the role of the Doctor, the role of The Master has since been recast many times due to an actor's death or desire to leave the show. After Roger Delgado was killed filming his final film, The Bells of Tibet, Jon Pertwee found himself missing a great friend. It was well known on set that Delgado and Pertwee were very close. Pertwee later commented that his hasty departure from the show was in part due to the loss of his friend.
