Doctor Who: 10 Best NuWho Guest Stars Ever

1. John Hurt

He may have played an incarnation of the Doctor, but John Hurt still counts as a guest star. His main appearance in the Whoniverse was as the special guest star in the 50th anniversary special, after all. He played the War Doctor in The Day of the Doctor, the incarnation that fought in the Time War and took the drastic measure of destroying Gallifrey.

Well, until the Tenth and Eleventh went back in time and helped him change history, that is.

Managing to act as a broad embodiment of the old series Doctors by giving a sense of them without directly referencing any, Hurt provided a fantastic dynamic with Smith and Tennant, undercutting the new series' Doctors silliness and enthusiasm with inch perfect one-liners. The sci-fi veteran managed to steal scenes with a flick of his eyes, which is quite impressive given the amount of talent he was working opposite.

Furthermore, he gave a real sense of the War Doctor's conflict, showing that the Time Lord really did care about every life he would be taking by using the Moment and truly capturing the character's desperation and weariness in going for that last resort. He managed to convince fans that he was definitely a Doctor which, given how vocal fandom can be in suggesting that there shouldn't be an addition to the canon, is highly impressive indeed.

What did you think of this list? Are there any other Doctor Who guest stars that should've been included? Let us know in the comments below!
