When script editor Andrew Carmel was asked to write up his ideas for the never made Season 27, he had the chance to bring to life the new companion the production team had toyed with back in 1989. Raine was to be in marked contrast to the tough, urban Ace. Raine was a posh cat burglar, the son of an East End gangster and a Russian mother. Winningly played by Beth Chalmers, Raine built up a strong relationship with the Doctor whilst also developing a nicely antagonistic, yet loyal, friendship with Ace. Big Finish released her from the realms of the might have been to incorporate her in their wider Doctor Who world in UNIT: Dominion in which Raine and the Doctor end up in the alternative dimension where he dropped off Elizabeth Klein (see entry 5), battling a phalanx of alien foes and facing the latest version of the Master.
