Doctor Who: 10 Big Finish Companions Who Deserve To Be On TV

4. Charley Pollard

The interesting thing about Big Finish is how much they predicted the way NuWho would go when it returned. In 2001, Paul McGann finally agreed to join the company and turn his Doctor from the 'George Lazenby of Doctor Who' to a fully realised and much loved audio character. As a companion, meanwhile, he was given Charlotte 'Charley' Pollard, an Edwardian adventuress he meets on the doomed 101 airship. He saves her, causing massive problems for the Web of Time that play out through the following two seasons of tales. At the time, this arc plot seemed innovative and it became the template for NuWho. Also innovative was the romance that developed between the Doctor and Charley. Four years before the Doctor and Rose went all misty eyed at each other, the Eighth Doctor and Charley were professing their love for each other. Like all the best romances, though, this one was doomed to fail, as Charley believed that the Eighth Doctor was dead and then started travelling with the Sixth Doctor for a time (in a storyline that could only work on audio). Resourceful, compassionate, fearless and a little bit spoilt, Charley remains one of the company's most popular creations. Voiced by India Fisher (best known for doing the narration on Masterchef), the character lives on in her own series working for the mysterious Viyrans.
