Doctor Who: 10 Big Finish Companions Who Deserve To Be On TV

3. Evelyn Smythe

When Colin Baker came to Big Finish, he had a lot to prove. His Doctor was constantly ranked as the worst ever and was disliked by many. However, Big Finish took great care to rehabilitate the nasty, rude TV version and one of their greatest masterstrokes was to give him a new companion that was very different to Peri Brown. Introduced in their sixth release, Maggie Stables played Evelyn, a 50-something university history lecturer who the Doctor met investigating time disturbances connected to her. From here, Evelyn became his time travelling companion and a great friend in equal measure. The pairing was inspired, Stables quickly developing a rapport with Baker that showed in their stories. Evelyn didn't suffer fools gladly and could not be bossed and bullied as Peri had been, meaning the Sixth Doctor had to change, too. The two had a much more equal relationship as Evelyn was never afraid to take him to task and the pair had several memorable adventures including battling the Forge, thwarting a Dalek invasion of Gallifrey and retelling an adventure with pirates through song. Evelyn eventually settled down on a planet with the kindly Rochester. Alas, Maggie Stables recently passed on but she leaves a memorable legacy for listeners.
