6. Day Of The Daleks (1972)
Third Doctor Jon Pertwee faced the Daleks many times but this adventure stands above them all with a gripping plot involving time traveling assassins and international political intrigue. What's not to love? This was the first appearance of the Daleks for many years after they had supposedly met their "final end" in the Troughton adventure Evil of the Daleks (nothing is ever really "final" on this series, though). This time around, the Daleks enlisted the help of another species, the ape-like Ogrons, to carry out their grunt work for them. At this point in their evolution, the Daleks have discovered time travel and are actively using it to increase their advantage throughout history. Here they are trying to prevent a peace conference from occurring and only the Doctor stands in their way of this happening. Will he prevent their diabolical plot from coming to fruition? You probably already know the answer to that one. Interesting trivia side note: When these episodes were filmed, only three original Dalek casings were left for the crew to use. This meant that no more than three Daleks could be seen on screen at any one time, making the final battle scene somewhat difficult to convincingly portray. The 2011 DVD reissue of this story makes an attempt to rectify this by adding layers of CGI-created Daleks to these scenes. It was worth a try.
