Doctor Who: 10 Famous Writers The Doctor Has Met

4. Jane Austen – Frostfire

Doctor Who The Shakespeare Code William Shakespeare
Big Finish

Jane Austen is perhaps best associated with Mr Darcy and romance, though her novels also focus on 18th and 19th society. Her books have been adapted into many times due to her popularity. However, it is in this Big Finish audio that she ends up meeting the First Doctor.

The story is told in retrospect by Vicki, one of the First Doctor’s companions, and describes how the TARDIS crew accidentally met Austen at a frost fair on the Thames. Austen ends up being a great help to the Doctor and his companions, first by helping Vicki when she faints, and then punching a possessed fire-eater! Austen then invites the TARDIS team to stay with her, and becomes caught up with them in a dangerous hunt for a phoenix egg. As the story progresses, Austen proves herself to be quite the adventurer, and even ends up dancing with the Doctor at a party!

As mentioned before, there are lots of screen adaptions of Austen’s work. Whilst most stick to the time period, the films Clueless and Bride and Prejudice reimagine the stories in more modern settings, giving them a new take.
