In season 12 we meet an old god, Zellin, who could induce nightmares in his victims. He did this by detaching his fingers and implanting them in a victim’s ear. Gross. He used this power to harvest nightmares to keep feeding his imprisoned love.

When Yaz suffers a nightmare, she relives a day from three years ago when she suffered from mental health issues and ran away from home. The audience is left wondering what she was going through; all we know is that Yaz dealt with bullying. It’s heavily speculated that she might have been coming to terms with her sexuality as many fans believe that Yaz is bisexual due to her relationship with Thirteen.

After she ran away, Yaz was discovered by a police officer, Anita Patel. Anita offers Yaz some wise words and tells her that if things aren’t better in three years, then she owes Yaz fifty quid. If things are better in three years, then Yaz owes her fifty pence.

When Yaz wakes from her nightmare, she tracks down Anita’s house. Upon opening the door, Anita recognises Yaz, who holds out a fifty pence coin. It’s a poignant moment that hits home hard, especially for people who have been in a similar situation, and serves as a reminder that things will always get better.
