Doctor Who: 10 Most Compelling Series 9 Fan Theories

1. The Eighth and Tenth Doctors Are Returning!

The greatest fan theory for Series 9 has to be this: Paul McGann and David Tennant's Doctors are returning! Be still my beating heart! I so wish this was true. But wait, maybe it is - sort of. Both Russell T Davies and David Tennant were seen visiting the Doctor Who set during filming. Maybe Tennant filmed a quick scene?

Of course, Tennant was unshaven the whole time, meaning that he wouldn't exactly look the part. And another nail in the coffin of this theory is that plenty of other Who-alumni were doing the rounds before filming wrapped up, like Doctor Who's first-ever director, Waris Hussein, and Georgia Moffett (Jenny from The Doctor's Daughter).

It's more likely that Tennant, RTD, and all the other famous visitors were just seeing the sights and conducting quick interviews for the DVD box set. But... but... the theory will not die, even in the face of these facts. It says, if there really is a scene in the finale set in a tomb beneath Gallifrey, then there could be ghostly shades defending the tomb... and these shades could look like earlier incarnations of the Doctor.

It's a great idea and I hope it's true, because it would be wonderful to see Tennant and McGann again in Doctor Who. But there's a part of me that thinks this fan theory sounds too good. It's probably better than anything we'll get to see in the real episode, because if there's one eternal truth in recent Doctor Who, it's that Moffatt is better at his build-ups than at his denouements.
