Doctor Who: 10 Most Underrated Eleventh Doctor Episodes

1. Amy's Choice

Doctor Who Amys Choice

Amy's Choice was met with a mixed response after its initial broadcast almost ten years ago, but we're going to contend that it's among the Eleventh Doctor's top five stories, a smartly-structured, witty and surreal sci-fi-thriller romp with one of NuWho's best supporting performances in Toby Jones' Dream Lord, and some of the most entertaining verbal sparring in the show's long history.

There's just something that's so, so enjoyable about watching the Doctor get taken down a peg or two, and The Dream Lord is more than up to the task, lashing out at his heroic counterpart with a ream of memorable insults and biting psychological assessments ("intergalactic WAG"... burn), and Jones' menacing yet playful delivery makes for a gloriously unpredictable character who steals every single scene he's in.

Smith, Gillan and Darvill are also great here too, with their increasing hysteria and uncertainty about which is the dream and which is reality producing some snappy back-and-forth conversations that slowly peel back the layers of the group. This is the episode where the trio really clicked, and you can see why this particular TARDIS team is often listed among the very best.

There's also an injection of that good old Doctor Who cheesiness in the form of... old people with alien eyeballs in their mouths. Of course! Add to that some inspired directing work that carries a bit of an Edgar Wright vibe, a compelling dreamy mystery, and Rory's epic ponytail, and Amy's Choice is easily one of the greatest Matt Smith episodes of all time... even if it isn't recognised as such.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
