Doctor Who: 10 Things You Didn't Know About The Pantheon Of The Gods

8. Captain Jack Has Fought The Pantheon - Sort Of

Everyone's favourite Time Agent Captain Jack Harkness had two run-ins with agents of the Pantheon during Doctor Who spinoff Torchwood.

In the Series 1 episode Small Worlds, it's revealed that Jack had previously encountered a species of malevolent "fairies" that could control the elements and kill people with rose petals. Encountering them again in the 21st century, Jack sacrificed the life of a little girl, Jasmine, to save the entire world from being devastated by the tiny terrors.

During the episode, Jack speculates that the fairies could be part Mara, implying that they may be agents of the Pantheon's God of Beasts. This suggests that Captain Jack has been exposed to a great big snake at some point prior to Torchwood, which isn't surprising considering how well-travelled he is.

So when did Jack encounter the Mara? In a story told by the Doctor? An unseen adventure while travelling with Nine and Rose? Or on Earth during his centuries working with Torchwood? Although it's never explicitly confirmed that the fairies are agents of the Mara, it's clear that Jack knows what he's talking about.

Jack later had to contend with another agent of the Pantheon in the Series 4 episode Immortal Sins, when the Trickster's Brigade used a Brainspawn – a parisitic, worm-like creature – to try and infect future President Franklin D. Roosevelt, destabilising America and changing the future of the world as a result.

Jack defeated the Brainspawn with the help of his companion Angelo Colasanto, stopping yet another Turn Left-style bleak alternate timeline from coming to pass!
