Doctor Who: 10 Things You Never Realised About Series 8
3. A Spirit Of Adventure
In The Caretaker, Clara and Danny meet with their students' parents, and above them hangs a banner with the school's name and its motto: A Spirit of Adventure. The episode's writer, Gareth Roberts, says it is a deliberate nod to a line in the First Doctor serial, The Sensorites. During the first episode of The Sensorites storyline, just before they set out to explore where they've landed, the Doctor says to Susan, Ian, and Barbara, It all started out as a mild curiosity in a junkyard, and now it's turned out to be quite a great spirit of adventure, don't you think? Since Ian goes on to be the Chairman of Governors at Coal Hill, it makes sense that this phrase would find its way into the modern day. The question is, have Clara and Ian ever met? Now, onto other companion parallels...
