Doctor Who: 10 Traumatising Monsters That Scarred You For Life

2. The Empty Child

In horror movies, otherworldly ghost children in recognisable masks that conceal what one would assume is a demonic face and expression are the norm. But the Empty Child somehow feels so fresh, illustrating that originality is not the name of the game here... execution is. Like how Toy Story feels like the first time everyone ever saw a story about living toys. Maybe because he is more than just some villain from a ghost movie. He is also treated as a vulnerable person. He represents a child who is left out, rejected because of his abnormalities and infectious disease, which the gas mask is a perfect metaphor of. Plus, his catchphrase - "Are you my mummy?€ - is as terrifying as they come because it's a demonic presence trying to pass off as an innocent child. It's also implies tragedy, as if he is actually a lost child who doesn't know what to do and is in need of someone. There is a perfect balance of fear and sympathy here which makes him even more dangerous.
