Doctor Who: 10 Unanswered Questions From The Revived Series

3. How Did Missy Escape Gallifrey?

The return of the Master is always a hotly debated occasion and this reached unprecedented heights at the end of the last series when he came back as... wait for it... a woman! As such, the majority of the audience were far too busy titterlating about his sex change to realise that it was never actually explained how the hell he/she came back in the first place. The last time fans saw the Master he looked like that bloke from Life on Mars and had just had his latest attempt at world domination (which involved giving every person on Earth his face - just 'cause!) thwarted before being sent "back into hell" within the confines of a time locked Gallifrey. That should have seemingly been the end of him along with the planet's imminent destruction at the end of the Time War but, as of The Day of the Doctor, time has been rewritten and it was never actually destroyed in the first place. As it stands, the Doctor's home planet is safe and sound within a pocket universe which means that the Master/Missy would have/should have/could have been in it, too. In fact, there's a blink and you'll miss it moment during the 50th anniversary special (above) that could actually be Missy escaping from the confines of the status cube in which Gallifrey is preserved. It certainly doesn't look like Clara's hand reaching out of the painting so maybe there really is more to it than meets the eye... As of Death in Heaven, though, there has been no concrete explanation regarding Missy's latest survival. The Master is notorious for cheating death and the Series 8 finale felt like it was setting her up for a much bigger story, so something tells us the answers that fans are craving will come sooner rather than later. It's nice to speculate in the meantime, isn't it?
