2. Donna Noble (Journey's End)
Ah, Donna Noble. She's already been featured on this list for starting her new married life with Shaun Temple but there was a time in which the future didn't look so bright for everybody's favourite temp from Chiswick. You know what's coming next, don't you? Donna certainly did. Her adventures with the Tenth Doctor were cruelly cut short at the end of Series 4 when absorbing his regeneration energy left her fully equipped with a mind to rival that of the show's titular Time Lord himself. Unsurprisingly this endless amount of new found universal knowledge was too much for her human brain to handle and the Doctor was forced to wipe her memories of their time together before it frazzled her completely. She did use her new expertise to destroy Davros and his almighty army of Daleks, though, so at least she went out in flames of glory. It was a heartbreaking and noble (geddit?) end to what had been a truly beautiful friendship and perhaps the saddest thing of all is that they would've continued to travel together forever had destiny not had other ideas. Donna was forced to go back to her normal life with no recollection of the world she had enjoyed and shared with the Doctor. Her TARDIS travels ultimately made her a better and more compassionate person but fans were left to deal with the gut-wrenching realisation that she'd now never be aware of her true potential. For one shining moment Donna Noble was the most important person in the whole universe but for many fans, she always will be.
