Doctor Who: 11 Things You Never Knew About Series 5 Of NuWho

4. The Lodger Originally Featured Meglos, Rose And Mickey

The Lodger was the eleventh episode of Series 5 but, had things worked out differently, it may have aired much sooner. Writer Gareth Roberts originally pitched the episode for Series 2 which would have made Tennant's Tenth Doctor Craig's lodger instead of the Eleventh. It then became a comic strip from the Doctor Who Magazine featuring the Tenth Doctor with Rose Tyler and Mickey Smith before Roberts wrote the episode for Matt Smith's debut series. Interestingly, Roberts also originally planned for the villain to be Meglos, last seen battling the Fourth Doctor. He ultimately decided against it after similar-looking aliens, the Vinvocci, appeared in the Tenth Doctor's final story The End of Time. Instead this is likely the first episode to directly feature the Silence, though they are not seen. Not only does the ship on top of Craig's flat look strikingly similar to the Silence ship seen in Day of the Moon, Amy calls out to something within the TARDIS but never mentions it again - perhaps this is the moment the enemy tampers with the ship to send it to its final destination in The Pandorica Opens? Ultimately The Lodger became a story that foreshadowed future events in more ways than one, even it was planned very differently to start with.
