Doctor Who: 15 Villains That Should Not Come Back

7. The Clockwork Repair Droids - The Girl In The FireplaceScreen Shot 2013-07-17 at 6.02.24 PM Just as I am one of the few who love "The Idiot's Lantern," I am one of the few who absolutely hate "The Girl in the Fireplace." For me, the most redeeming factors were the costuming, horse jokes, villains, and characterization. Just kidding. Ten's characterization was terrible and I still haven't forgiven Moffat. The best part of the episode by far, however, is the antagonists. Like the Reapers, they aren't actually bad. They're just trying to do their jobs. The amazingly creepy clockwork repair droids that stalk Madame de Pompadour for her entire life (a plot that Moffat will repeat in Season 5 with Amy Pond) are fantastic. The scene with her as a girl hiding under the covers as the Doctor sleuths out the ticking noise in the dark brings back every childhood fear that any of us have ever had. In an episode filled with flopped characterization and poor decision-making, the clockwork droids rank up as one of Moffat's top three villainous creatures. All the same, Madame de Pompadour is dead and Ten is gone and pre-Revolutionary France has been done. So the clockwork repair droids should remain bottled in their episode, which I hear some people think is a slightly good one.
