Doctor Who: 8 Characters Who Should Return in Series 9

4. Ian Chesterton

As one of the first companions to join the Doctor way back in 1963, Ian Chesterton is a hugely important character in Doctor Who history. While it might seem odd to bring him back after all these years out of the blue, the show has hinted at his return ever since his old working place, Coal Hill School, reappeared in The Day of the Doctor. He was even named as its Chairman of the Governors, yet even though Coal Hill featured prominently throughout Series 8, Ian was nowhere to be seen. Well, there's been too much teasing about Ian returning - now it needs to actually happen. The show tried to get him back before for 1983's Mawdryn Undead but the actor was unavailable. Now aged 90, William Russell is still acting and has shown he is happy to come back for Doctor Who as he appeared in a small role in 2013's biopic An Adventure in Space and Time. It would be lovely to see the Doctor and Ian meet again, now that they are both much older and wiser. Or if that's a bit much, there could be a small scene in which the two of them both walk around Coal Hill but miss each other. Actually that might be too painful. For God's sake, Moffat, don't read this!
